Hiraodai-1

Hiraodai

Hiraodai Limestone Plateau is counted among the three major karst formations in Japan and has been designated a natural monument, a quasi-national park, and prefectural natural park.
At an altitude of 300-700m and measuring 6km from north to south and 2km from east to west, this plateau dotted with limestone rock is a popular trekking location. Do not miss the lion-shaped rock and the rocks resembling a kissing couple. Among other unusual sights of nature are trees growing entwined with the limestone.
Other great activities to try include making soba noodles and ceramics at the SOLA LAND HIRAODAI Countryside Park, walking around the Senbutsu Stalactite Cave and caving.

Sightseeing information

  • Senbutsu Stalactite Cave

    Senbutsu Stalactite Cave

This limestone cave was designated as a national natural monument in 1935. Formed by groundwater erosion as typical of limestone areas, this is one of the largest caves in Hiraodai. At the entrance to the cave is the staggering sight of more than 30 large and small stalactites hanging down from above. Lighting is installed up to about 900 meters in from the entrance, and from a certain point the path follows a small stream. It is an exciting place to explore.

Once you set out walking in Hiraidao, you will enjoy great views no matter where you are. We recommend starting with the Fukiagetoge Pass route. There are climbs and descents but the views are spectacular from Mt. Hera to Shihodai and if you have time, take the trail to Mt. Nuki.
