The Kaho Alps
Name of route: The Kaho Alps (Mt. Umami, Mt. Egawadake, Mt. Heizan, Mt. Kosho)
In 2016, the peaks of Mt. Umami, Mt. Heizan and Mt. Kosho were listed as Japan mountain heritage. At the trailhead is a camping ground and there is a set route up from the Asakura City side.
From Kama Pass to Akizuki, the route follows the Kyushu Nature Trail and there is a wealth of sights to see, including the Virgin boxwood forest (a Government-designated Natural Monument). Hikers will also feast their eyes on the Windhole and Gojisho Rock on the path up Mt. Umami.

Mt. Umami Camp Village
Mt. Umami is the highest peak of the Kaho Alps. This camping facility, located in the foothills, is open in the summer months of July to September. It is known for good value and has log houses, a cookhouse and more.

The Windhole and Gojisho Rock (Mt. Umami)
There are two sights not to be missed on the Mt. Umami route. The Windhole is a gap in rocks that makes the cooling sound of a burbling brook, a pleasant cool breeze in summer. Near the summit is the Gojisho Rock, standing at 24m. It is a giant rock with a bizarre shape that never ceases to amaze us.

Jewel bug (Mt. Kosho)
