Kyushu OLLE 【06 Beginner~Intermidiate】Fukuoka Shingu course -Feel the whole energetic vibe of the Shingu course along with sea breeze. Relax with nature and the history in the town.-

Trekkers can relax and be on with nature in this course which is just 30 minutes away from Hakata/Tenjin station in Fukuoka.

Course Outline

The first half of the course is around Mt. Tachibana, which has a rich history, historical buildings and a mandarin field. There is also an observation deck where trekkers can experience beautiful sight of Ainoshima island is located in Genkai-nada Sea.
The latter half, trekkers head to the pain pine grove pass through the central of the town…there is the Shingu Beach where trekkers can feel a sense of accomplishment with sea breeze.

    In spring, a large cherry tree welcomes you. This is a scenic spot with a view of Mt. Tachibana, where numerous historical dramas were created, including Tachibana Michiyuki, Ginchiyo(the female lord), and Tachibana Muneshige, who made a miraculous comeback.

    The old townscape in Tachibanaguchi-ku located at the foot of Mt. Tachibana is the home of many old and historic houses which dates back to 100 years ago. Mt. Tachibana was also once the location of the Tachibanayama castle built by Mr. Otomo Sadatoshi in the early 1330’s. Some of the old names of the areas located at the foot of Mt. Tachibana which are still widely used by locals are Daimon, O-yashiki, Yashiki and Yokoin. Trekkers can feel and experience the atmosphere of the castle town which has a crooked square street. The houses fronting the streets of the old townscape has what the locals call the ”Nagaya-Mon” which is a gate that has an extra space which is used as a warehouse by the mandarin farmers during the busy harvest season or sometimes they use it as temporary living space.


  • 3. Rokusho Shrine Yakushi-dō Furuidoato ruin

    3. Rokusho Shrine Yakushi-dō Furuidoato ruin

    You can also find the Rokusho Shrine in Tachibanaguchi where the warrior Tachibana Dosetsu prayed to his god Rokusho Gongen to help him win his battles. Near the shrine, trekkers can also witness the Litsea coreana which is one of the designated natural treasures of Fukuoka back in 2013 and also the current 3rd biggest of its kind in Kyushu. It has a height of 10.5m and is around 300-400 years old. Inside the shrine trekkers can find the Yakushi-do, which is the area where the people pray, and there is also the ruins of the Tokkosui well.

  • 4. Tokkoji Temple

    4. Tokkoji Temple

    A temple that was first opened by monks from the Tendai sect of Buddhism. They needed a place for construction, and so tossing a bell into the air, they built it on the spot where the bell fell back to the Earth. Within the grounds of the temple water wells up, and there is also a stone where it is said Zazen was invented.

    5. Shingu Ai-no-Oka (Lookout)

    On this course that follows the Genkai Sea where you can see islands like Ainoshima, we recommend this look out spot. If the weather is good you can see all the way to Iki.

  • 6. Taiko-Sui well

    6. Taiko-Sui well

    This well has a connection to Hideyoshi Toyotomi. It is said that when Hideyoshi came to Kyushu, he partook tea made from the water in the well and declared it delicious. Even now many people are using the well.

    7. Fufu Komamori Daimyojin shrine

    It was moved to the current location due to park construction work. It is said that the spirit here protects children and village people.

    8. Okita Chuo park / Shingu town Tourism Information Centre

    In the park in front of JR Shingu-Chuo Station is a park where many locals visit, and lively children play. It is also a very rare sight to have a park spread out right in front of a station. There is a tourist information center within the station too, so if you have any troubles along the course why not drop in?

    This coast is located in the Genkai National Park. The beaches and pine forests are beautiful, and perfect for a nice stroll. The gentle curve on the coast is called ”Parasol’s Edge.”

    10. Tate-no-Matsubara pinery

    The trees here were originally planted somewhere around the 17th century by the domain lord of Fukuoka at the time. Therefore it is name the Tate-no-Matsubara Pinery, or ”Shield Pinery.”

Transportation to Starting Locations

From the start point please use the community bus (for Saya). You can take the bus from Nishitetsu Shingu Station, or the JR Fukkodaimae Station.

【From JR Hakata station】
By rapid or local train → JR Fukkodaimae station approximately 20 min.

【From Tenjin station (subway + Nishitetsu train)】
Tenjin station (subway) → Kaizuka station 〈Nishitetsu Kaiduka line〉 → Nishitetsu Shingu station approximately 40 min.

【From Fukuoka airport (subway + JR)】
Fukuoka airport station (subway) → JR Hakata station 〈rapid or local train〉 → JR Fukkodaimae station approximately 30 min. 

【From Fukuoka airport (subway + Nishitetsu train)】
Fukuoka airport station (subway) → Gofukumachi station (subway) → Kaizuka station 〈Nishitetsu Kaiduka line〉 → Nishitetsu Shingu station approximately 50 min.

【From Kokura station】
JR Kokura station 〈rapid train〉 → JR Fukkodaimae station approximately 70 min.

Nishitetsu Shingu station-mae → JR Fukkodai-mae → Saya bus stop(final destination) approximately 40 min. 

The Kyushu Expressway is near the start point. It is 5 minutes walk from the Kosoku(expressway) Tachibanayama bus stop.

Fukuoka bus terminal (To Nogata) → 〈Kyushu expressway〉 → Tachibanayama bus stop approximately 30 min.
