Kanda Float Festival

苅田山笠

Kanda Float Festival is held from mid-September to the first week of October every year and has been designated an Intengible Folk Cultural Asset by Fukuoka Prefecture. It is said to be one of the Three Major Float Festivals in Kyushu and is famous for its “Fighting Float”, in which competing floats hit each other wildly! The same floats are also used for the Shinkosai Festival (festival to transport the gods) at Uhara Shrine and are considered rare for changing their appearance three times within 15 days; they appear as “Hiyama (decorated with 224 lanterns)”, “Noboriyama (decorated with flags)”, and “Iwayama (decorated with dolls and using an imitation rock background)”.
Why not join in the vigorous festival and watch all 14 unique floats as well as the happi coats of each region?
