Higashida Blast Furnace No. 1 Historical Site Plaza

東田第一高炉史跡広場

Higashida Blast Furnace No. 1 started its operation in 1901, and while it did undergo repeated improvements, the furnace continued to manufacture iron that bolstered local industries for nearly three-quarters of a century. Tenth in a succession of repairs, the most recent blast furnace ceased production in 1972 and received care and maintenance.
Kitakyushu City designated the area around Higashida Blast Furnace No. 1 a cultural asset and has opened it to the public as a historical site plaza. Along with the blast furnace itself, panels outlining the history of the furnace as well as railroad cars nicknamed “Torpedo Cars” and a converter furance are on display in the plaza. The Torpedo Cars were used to convey pit iron that had been melted down in the blast furnace, while the converter furnace was used to turn that pit iron into high quality steel to be used for various purposes.
