Nogata Memorial Hall of Coal
直方市石炭記念館
The main building was built-in 1910 (Meiji 43) as an assembly place of the Chikuho Coal and Mining Industry Union. Presently, the main building is used as a museum to teach the history of the Chikuho Coal Field. On display in the facility are photographs, drawings and models of mining. There are also countless other displays! Some of these include a working steam locomotive and an excavation machine!
Lastly, on the reverse side of the building remains a tunnel used as the rescue practice grounds by the Kyushu Coal Mine Rescue Team (formed in 1952 (Showa 27))
Postscript
The Chikuho Coal field yielded 800 million tons of coal in the 100 years of its existence, starting in the beginning of the Meiji era (1868-1912) until 1976 (Showa 51). During this time, the coal field contributed to the industrial development and modernization of Japan. In July 1971 (Showa 46), a memorial hall was built to convey the importance of the Chikuho Coal Field.
