Kurume Centennial Park
久留米百年公園
Close to the Chikugo River, a resting place for citizens known for its cherry blossoms and azaleas.
This park was completed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Kurume's municipal organisation. The vast site includes a lawn, an event square and a multi-purpose square, and is adjacent to the Central Park where the Youth Science Museum and the Avian Centre are located.
The azalea garden in the park is planted with approximately 120,000 azaleas, including the Yae Kirishima azalea presented by Tatebayashi City and old azalea trees sent from Wadomari Town and Nagai City, and is usually crowded with azalea fans during the Kurume Azalea Festival, which is held every year around the best time of year. The area also borders the banks of the Takara River and the Chikugo River, and during the cherry blossom season, the riverside is lined with approximately 200 cherry blossom trees, making it a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing. To the east, the Mino mountain range, with its history and romance, can be viewed.
As the base of the Kurume-Tosu Regional Technopolis, a research centre building has also been developed where exhibitions and other events and symposia are held.
