Former Home of the Yoshihara Family
旧吉原家住宅
The former home of the Yoshihara family has been deemed a Government-Designated Important Cultural Asset for its sheer size, superior design, and definate construction date, as well as for being one of the more significant private residences in all of Kyushu. The Yoshihara family served as administrators of Kobo Town in the Yanagawa domain for generations, later attaining responsibility for legal and political affairs for the Kamachi-gumi. A dark ink inscription dating back to the 8th year of the Bunsei Period (1825) remains on the beam above the traditional Japanese entryway; it is thought that the house was built by the feudal lord at that time, Yoshihara Saburo Zaemon Sanun, and used for official business. A gate for nobles was added and storagerooms remodeled for government scouts temporarily stationed there by the feudal government between 1830 and 1844.
