Fukuoka Mitsukoshi
福岡三越
In 1997, Mitsukoshi (Headquarters: Tokyo) opened a branch store in Tenjin, Fukuoka City.
The lion statues, symbolic of Mitsukoshi, is exactly identical to the lion statue in Trafalgar Square in London that was made to commemorate the victory of English Admiral Nelson who defeated the Spanish Armada. In 1914, The proprietor of the day who liked the lion statue displayed the same ones in front of the entrance of the main store. It became a symbol of ”Bravery, generosity, and grace” and thus every store has lion statues at its entrance.
