Karashi Mentaiko
辛子明太子
”Karashi Mentaiko”, known as Flavor of Hakata and one of the classic souvenirs, is made of
Alaskan Pollock roe that is soaked in a mixture of liquid seasonings including numerous spices such as chili pepper.
By itself it’s good with rice, and perfect to go with sake.
It’s also surprisingly compatible with a number of ingredients, including eggs, omelets, and even as a flavoring for pasta sauce.
There are many stores and different types of mentaiko in Fukuoka Prefecture.
We have various types of Mentaiko including a mildly-spicy type, a low-salt type, a wine-flavor type and a Yuzu-flavor type. ”Iwashi Mentaiko’ , a sardine stuffed with mentaiko, and ”Squid Mentako”, strip-cut squid dressed with mentaiko, are also available.
Each store has a different flavor.
You can visit many stores, try different kinds, and enjoy a journey through Fukuoka and Hakata to find your favorite type of karashi mentaiko. When you come to Fukuoka/Hakata, be sure to look for Karashi Mentaiko.
