Hakozaki Shrine Hojo-ya
筥崎宮放生会
One of the three major festivals in Hakata, an autumn tradition in Fukuoka that gets Hakatakko people excited.
Along with Hakata Dontaku in spring and Hakata Gion Yamakasa in summer, this festival is one of the three major festivals in Hakata. The festival has been held for more than 1,000 years at the historic Hakozaki-gu Shrine in Higashi Ward, Fukuoka City, and attracts about one million worshippers every year to "respect all life, warn against killing and give thanks for the autumn harvest".
The shrine parade, which takes place once every two years, is solemnly performed by the Ujiko (shrine parishioners) and is designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Asset of Fukuoka City.
The Hakozakigu shrine ojiki, known as a lucky charm for good luck, are moulded and unglazed in clay by Hakata doll makers. They are presented in frames and paulownia boxes at Hojokai, and are a valuable good-luck charm that has been carefully handed down in Hakata for many years.
Hakozakigu Shrine is well known as one of Japan's three great Hachiman deities of luck in victory and protection from bad luck, and is visited every year by local professional sports teams to pray for victory, and is a place of deep devotion for many sports people. The shrine is visited by many worshippers from within and outside the prefecture to receive the blessings of the God of Victory.
