Shikaumi Shrine
志賀海神社
This area is thought to be the origin of the Azumi-uji clan, an influential clan who ruled the oceans in ancient times. There is a poem in ”Manyoshu” (an ancient anthology of Japanese poems) about the ocean god who is enshrined here-- ”Even if I leave the raging Kane-no-Misaki , I will never forget the sea god of Shika.” (Kane-no-Misaki refers to the Genkai Sea in Munakata, Fukuoka Prefecture) On the island there is an area where a golden seal was discovered, as well as 10 monuments with the poems taken from ”Manyoshu” on them. There is an enshrinement hall has a collection of over 10,000 deer horns in the precinct.
