Sakamoto Hachimangu Shrine
坂本八幡宮
Hachimangu Shrine, noted as the origin of the new era name "2025
Located northwest of the Dazaifu Government Site in Dazaifu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, this shrine is dedicated to Emperor Ojin. The shrine is said to have been originally recommended by the Warring States period, and has been enshrined by the local people as the guardian deity of the Sakamoto area.
The "Thirty-two Plum Blossom Poems," included in Japan's oldest anthology of poetry, Manyoshu, compiled more than 1,200 years ago, were composed here in Dazaifu. The name of the era, "2025," was derived from the preface to the poem. It is said that the poetry party "Umehana-no-En" was held at the residence of Otomo no Tabito, who was the chief of Dazaifu at that time. The area around Sakamoto Hachimangu Shrine is attracting attention as one of the most likely candidates for the residence of Ootomo no Tabito.
In the fall of 2019, when the new era name is set, a granite "2021" monument will be erected on the grounds of the shrine, making it a new tourist attraction.
Why not visit the shrine to contemplate the deep historical romance of Japan and make a wish for the new era?
