Mt. Tonbo’s Mutual Love Cherry Blossoms
十坊山の相思の桜
The blossoms of these two mountain cherries appear like hands joined together, and so they are called the ”Mutual Love Cherry Blossoms.” The larger tree has a trunk circumference of 3.65m, height of 18m, and is estimated to be 250 years old. The smaller of the trees has a 2m trunk circumference, and is estimated to be 100 years old. There is a space of 17m between them, but when their flowers bloom they appear like hands joined together in the sky, which is why the locals call them the ”Mutual Love Cherry Blossoms.” They are surrounded by an evergreen forest with Japanese oaks, Japanese stone oaks, camellias, and sawtooth oaks. A few years ago, the ”Mutual Love Cherry Blossoms” Cherry Lovers’ Society was formed, which puts together flower viewing tours a few times per year.
