Sea of clouds at Seisuiji Temple

清水寺の雲海

Recommended spots to see fantastic "sea of clouds," a rarity in Fukuoka.

Seisuiji Temple is located 200 meters above sea level on a hill in the Kuromaru district of Miyawaka City, which is situated in a basin surrounded by mountains.
The temple is said to have been founded by the monk Gyoki during the Tempyo period (729-748). It is a historic temple dedicated to the prefecture-designated cultural asset "Juichimen Kannon Bosatsu Zazo" (seated image of eleven-faced Kannon) and the secret statue of "Senju Kannon Bosatsu" (thousand-armed Kannon).
Located on a hill, on a clear day you can see the Wakamiya Basin and as far as Kitakyushu.
On humid mornings after a rainy day, the temple is a popular cloud sea spot, where a mysterious and beautiful sea of clouds can be seen. On days when the conditions are right, many photographers gather here. The mountains dotting the Wakamiya Basin float in the sea of clouds, creating a fantastic view like an ink painting. If you are lucky, you can enjoy the sea of clouds even after the sun rises.
