Okawa Kumiko

大川組子

Okawa Kumiko is a brand of Okawa Furniture. The brand has successfully combined the technique of furniture making with traditional handicraft work passed down in the region. Their products consist of meticulously hand-carved wooden pieces put together to form, typically but not limited to, a large lattice or a partition which would then cast beautiful shadows and colors of the wood as the sunlight hits the room.
With a long history of woodworking tradition, this specialized latticework is truly a product of artistic minds and masterful techniques meshing together through the hands of craftsmen only a town like Okawa can produce. More recent creations include wall hanging decors, chair-rails, and baseboards. Currently, the president of the Okawa Kumiko Promotion Association is the only craftswoman in the nation. She is representing Minatoya, one of the 18 workshops of Okawa Kumiko.
With a reservation ahead of time, their highly-esteemed, Prime Minister’s Award winning piece is available for viewing - which is, without a doubt, a must-see.
