Okaminato Shrine
岡湊神社
The "Nanjamonja" tree, with its snow-white flowers, turns the precincts white.
Okaminato Shrine, a Shinto shrine in Ashiya-cho, boasts a history of approximately 1,800 years and is mentioned in the "Chronicles of Japan" and "Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters).
Due to a legend, the shrine has been worshipped as the god of prevention of bad luck, substitution, and traffic safety, and the traditional "Asiya Doll Thanksgiving Festival" is held on April 29 every year.On Saturdays and Sundays in mid-July, two Yamakasa floats carrying Hakata dolls parade through the town. The annual festival will be held on October 15 and 16.
There are many cultural assets on the shrine grounds, and the "Shikijitsu Daito" (stone lantern) donated by a merchant and the oblong plaque (like the nameplate of a shrine) with calligraphy by Prince Kitashirakawa are very valuable. The "Senkoin Dai Sotetsu (natural monument of Fukuoka Prefecture)" in the residence of the shrine's priest was brought back from the Hara Castle by the Kuroda clan soldiers when they suppressed the "Shimabara Rebellion" and is said to be over 400 years old.
The precincts of the shrine are home to nearly 200 trees of the same parent tree as the Meiji Jingu Gaien, the "nanjamonja" (Japanese name: hitotsubatago), both large and small, which bloom from early April to late May with pure white flowers that look like snow, creating a spectacular contrast with the green of the leaves.
