Higashida Blast Furnace No. 1
東田第一高炉跡
Higashida Blast Furnace No. 1 began its operations in 1901 (Meiji 34) and, with repeated repair work, continued to manufacture steel that bolstered industries. The current blast furnace is one that has been maintained to preserve the 10th refurbished blast furnace, which was closed down in 1972 (Showa 47). Kitakyushu City designated the area around Higashida Blast Furnace No. 1 a cultural property (historical site) and has opened it to the public as a historical site plaza. In addition to the blast furnace, panels outlining the history of the furnace, the railroad cars that used to haul molten pig iron from the blast furnace, and the converter, which turned that pit iron into high quality steel to be used for various purposes, are on display in the plaza.
