やましお漬

Spicy and addictive! Kurume's specialty product that is also suitable as a snack

Yamashio pickles are a specialty of Kitano Town, Kurume City. The Chinese character for "yama-shio" (mountain tide) is a green vegetable, and yama-shio pickles are made by pickling it overnight.
It is said that about 300 years ago, when the Chikugo River overflowed and caused a landslide upstream, the seeds of yama-shio were washed away and grew wild on the sandbank of the Chikugo River. In the Chikugo region, a landslide is called "Yamashio.
Crunchy yamashio pickles resemble takana pickles at first glance, but are characterized by being slightly spicier than takana. It can be sliced into strips or chopped, topped with dried bonito flakes, and served with soy sauce or ponzu (Japanese citrus juice) for a richer flavor. It can also be served with grated daikon, stir-fried, or in miso soup. It can be served with rice or sake, depending on your preference!
It is a seasonal product available from October to March, and can be purchased at nearby mass merchandisers or directly at JA Mii's manufacturing plant.
