Koga Shinto Alter Store is a long-established store with nearly a 100-year history. The present second Shinto alter maker, Mr. Kuniaki Koga has made alters for 50 and more years preserving the traditional skills. Shinto alter making in Yanagawa is said to have been started by a Buddhist alter maker in Edo Era (1603 – 1868). Therefore, the Buddhist alter making technique appears characteristically throughout the Yanagawa’s Shinto alters. The Shinto alters are made using Japanese cypress only, and the beautiful wood grains and aroma enhance the mysterious image furthermore. There are three different types of Shinto alters. They are the Dazaifu style, the Ise style, and the Izumo style. In addition, the Shinto alter which Mr. Goga had made just for fun for the first time to keep lottery tickets in (2,000 yen) has a reputation for bringing good luck! Since it had been on newspapers and TV, it became famous nationwide and many letters have been sent by lottery winners (although no one tells how much he or she won …).
