Yame-Kurogi Big Wisteria Festival (Susan Susan Shrine)
八女黒木大藤まつり(素盞嗚神社)
The wisteria trellis is over 620 years old! The spectacular wisteria trellis that covers the precincts of the temple attracts people.
Susanoo Shrine is located near Route 442 in Kurogi-cho, Yame City. This festival is held from mid-April to early May every year to coincide with the blooming of the giant wisteria tree in the shrine grounds.
The wisteria, which is said to be over 620 years old, has survived many battles and fires and has become known throughout Japan as the wisteria of longevity. It was designated a natural monument in 1928.
The wisteria trellises cover a total area of about 3,000 square meters, and are stunning when in full bloom. When in full bloom, the wisteria trellis is a sight to behold. The purple clusters of flowers, some over 1 meter long, hang down and fascinate visitors.
During the festival, the grounds are lined with stalls and the town's sake brewery is open for tours. Visitors from far away will be able to spend a whole day enjoying the festival.
