Kurume Kasuri Giemon-kan
久留米かすり 儀右ヱ門館
Kurume Kasuri is a type of weaving that has 200 years of history behind it. It is a fabric that is made using a complicated 30-step process. It is beloved by many people both male and female, young and old, for its good feel on the skin, durable cotton threads, and texture that you grow accustomed to the more you use it. Okamoto Shoten Co. Ltd has opened the ”Giemon-kan”, named after a man known as the ’Japanese Thomas Edison’, Tanaka Giemon. At this store they sell a wide variety of items, such as accessories like hats and bags as well as western-style clothes. Their new ”gi” brand select shop focuses on miscellaneous goods and original-design clothes. Through fashion shows and collaborations with local industry, they work to assertively promote the charms of Kurume kasuri. Director and general manager Hideki Noguchi says ”Rather than being concerned about the formalities of the traditional craft, we think the real ’Kurume kasuri’ is finding something truly great, or something that you fall in love with...that’s our ideal.” Why not experience the goodness of Kurume kasuri by touching and feeling it yourself?
