Old Matsuki Soy Sauce Shop (Kyu Matsuki Shoyu Ya)

旧松喜醤油屋

The Matsuki Shoyu Ya was a factory which made Shoyu (soy sauce) until 1965 (Showa 40). Construction of the building started at the end of the Edo period (1603-1868) and continued through to the beginning of the Meiji period (1868-1912). Presently, visitors can enter the main wing of the building as well as the garden. There is a chest of drawers, which is still used, under the stairs between the first and second floors called ”Hakogaidan”. Another unique feature of the house is the ”Sentei Tenjyo”. The Sentei Tenjyo is the ceiling of the building which is shaped like a bottom of a ship. On the main pillar of the building, visitors can still see the scars thought to be made during the Chikuzen Takeyari Insurrection in 1873 (Meiji 6). The “Tsukimidai” is a separate building not regularly seen in Japan. Visitors to Matsuki Shoyu Ya will be astounded by the beauty here! Unfortunately, nothing but photos remain of the equipment used to make the Shoyu.
