Shikanoshima Island is famous as being the location where the King of Na gold seal, or “Kinin” in Japanese, was discovered, now considered a national treasure. The Kinin Kaido is a road that runs the circumference of the island that is a perfect cycling route for its view of the Genkai-Nada Sea.

*Though known as an island, Shikanoshima actually offers a unique geological formation as it is connected to the mainland. This time we will introduce a course that involves traveling there by ferry, but you can also get there by car or bus by traveling along the single Michikiri road that passes through the sea.

Take an approximately 30 minute ferry ride from Hakata Port to Shikanoshima via Saitozaki.
This ferry takes 15 round trips per day, so it is the perfect way to fully enjoy a day-trip to Shikanoshima.

A short walk
Shikashima Cycle
A rental bicycle shop and cafe to serve as your sightseeing hub
Look for the Torii gate of Shikaumi Shrine to find this rental bicycle shop. The shop features mainly a collection of sporting bikes, such as cross bikes and mountain bikes, for rent. One advantage here is that free locks and helmets are included with the bike, so you don’t have to bring anything!
Also be sure to stop by the adjacent cafe and shop to prepare before heading out.

Kinin (Gold Seal) Park
The place where the King of Na gold seal, said to have been gifted by China in the year 57 AD, was discovered
The King of Na gold seal, or Kinin in Japanese, is a national treasure that is said to have been discovered nearby this place. The grounds here feature monuments and replicas of the gold seal, as well as ancient maps of the area around Shikanoshima, making it a perfect place for a walk.
Why not imagine the trade that took place here with the mainland in ancient times as you gaze out at Nokonoshima Island and the Genkai-Nada Sea?

Here is everything you need to know about the Genkai Quasi-National Park and Shikanoshima area
This facility teaches you all about the unique nature and history of Shikanoshima. Here, dioramas and other exhibits are used to explain the discovery of the King of Na gold seal, a national treasure, and how the island became connected to the mainland through a rare geological formation where a sandbar formed through sedimentation.
The more you learn about the Genkai Quasi-National Park and the Shikanoshima area, the more fun you will have during your stay here.

Kyukamura Shikanoshima
Enjoy lunch and a relaxing moment in a hot spring
Visitors to Kyukamura Shikanoshima can dine on such delights as the famed Sazae-don, or
Turbo sazae rice bowl, as well as the other seafood rice bowl dishes available at the facility’s restaurant.
After your meal, make sure to enjoy a relaxing moment at the Gold Seal Bath, the only hot spring on Shikanoshima. Both the restaurant and hot spring offer a view of the Genkai-Nada Sea, allowing you to enjoy dining and bathing in the ultimate location.
They also offer sweets and items designed after the King of Na gold seal, so make sure to pick up some souvenirs.

Katsuma Beach
Enjoy a beautiful beach looking out on Genkai and Okitsu islands
This beach is located at the northernmost point of the island. The water here is pristine and clear, and offers a beautiful blue vista as far as you look. When you look out to sea, you can see both Genkai and Okitsu islands in the distance.
There is a well maintained lawn in front of the shoreline, and many visitors sit there and relax for a while. When the tide is low, paths to the surrounding islands emerge, so make sure you head over to them.

Shiomi Park Observatory
A viewpoint with a wide open 360 degree panoramic view
The Shiomi Park Observatory is located within Shiomi Park at the highest point on the island. You can take in the entire Hakata Bay on a sunny day, and enjoy watching the ships traveling back and forth between Nokonoshima Island and Shikanoshima Island. And if the air is really clear, you can even see as far as Orono Island and Iki island in the distance, and the world heritage Okinoshima.

Shikaumi Shrine
A power spot that enshrines the god who watches over the sea
Shikaumi Shrine has long been worshipped as the chief guardian of Hakata Bay, a strategic location for maritime traffic. The grounds of the shrine, which sits protectively on a mountain of medium height over the island, are filled with things to see, such as the main shrine that enshrines the god, the Imamiya sub shrine, and 12 different satellite shrines representing shrines located elsewhere. Also make sure to check out the items available here that exemplify the shrine and its reputation as the City of Dragons, where dragons gather, including endearing fortunes using a motif with a dragon’s face and protective amulets designed after dragons.
Enjoy a stroll around the grounds here, soothed by the songs of the birds and the gentle sounds of the distant waves.

How was Shikanoshima?
After worshipping at Shikaumi Shrine, return your bike, and then enjoy some shopping around the port area. Here you can purchase local Shikanoshima delicacies such as the turbo sazae snails, wakame seaweed, and dried fish.
Shikanoshima is famous for its beautiful sunsets. You can view them from Katsuma Beach or the Shiomi Park Observatory, so if you have the time, why not spend the night on Shikanoshima so you can enjoy those sunsets to the fullest?
