Hakata Gion Yamakasa Chiyo-nagare Kaki-Yamakasa display

Come experience a unique summer tradition in Hakata – the "Hakata Gion Yamakasa" festival!

Right now, you can see special Chiyo-nagare Kaki-Yamakasa dolls on the first floor of the Fukuoka Prefectural Office.

The Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival is a significant event in Fukuoka with a rich history spanning over 780 years. It has even been recognized as a national Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property and listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016. The display features the 2023 Kaki-Yamakasa from the Chiyo-nagare area, one of the seven groups that organize the Yamakasa festival, covering the vicinity of the Fukuoka Prefectural Office.

What makes this year's display even more special is that, for the first time in the festival's long history, a female Hakata doll maker, Sachiko Kawasaki, took charge of creating the Yamakasa. Following Japanese mythology, Sachiko is responsible for the goddess Amaterasu on the front, while her younger brother, Shuichi Kawasaki, also a Hakata doll maker, is in charge of the brother deity Susanoo on the back.

Despite having separate themes for the front and back based on mythology, the collaboration of Sachiko and Shuichi, who have worked together for years, beautifully brings the elements together. This is a fantastic opportunity to get a close look at the intricately crafted Yamakasa decorations, showcasing beauty, dynamism, and attention to the smallest details. Don't miss this chance to witness the artistry of Hakata Gion Yamakasa!
