Firefly Festival (Tanada Shinsui Park, Toho-mura)
ほたるまつり(東峰村 棚田親水公園広場)
In the late 1970’s, two young people who had left their previous jobs and found work in Toho-mura began river beautification and firefly breeding projects. Today, their unassuming firefly preservation efforts have finally born fruit, restoring the sight of magical, dancing light to the (summer night) skies. The Hoshuyama and Taihi Rivers that run through the village are known as some of the most famous places in the prefecture to see fireflies. These venues always come to life during the annual the Firefly Festival (which has been held since 1987), where the herb-grilled chicken and stalls set up by the villagers at night are quite popular! A free shuttle bus runs between the temporary parking lot and the venues on the day of the festival (the first Saturday in June). Late May through mid June is the best time to see the fireflies.
