Miyajitake Shrine Autumn Grand Festival
宮地嶽神社 秋季大祭
Don't miss the spectacular procession, which is like stepping back in time to the Heian period (794-1192).
The Autumn Grand Festival is the largest festival at Miyajitake Shrine and is also known as the 'Hojo-e'. This festival has been held for about 600 years to express gratitude (kami-no-kai) for the blessings of the gods (rich harvest).
The highlight of the festival is the Gojinkosai, a grand procession that is reminiscent of a dynastic picture scroll. Every year, selected female performers are dressed in juni-hitoe (12-layered kimono) and lead the procession of priests in robes and crowns, which includes a portable shrine carrying the sacred object, a keiyari parade, an ox carriage carrying the festival leader, and left and right ministers. Many tourists fill the approach to the shrine to see the spectacle, which is like stepping back in time to the Heian period.
On the 22nd, the 'Wish Come True! Kaiun Fireworks Display" is held on the 22nd. Visitors put their dreams and wishes on each firework and pray that their daily worries will disappear and they will be fulfilled safely. Fireworks with wishes on them are shot high into the night sky. Wishes are also invited from all over the country by e-mail and fax.
