Kichijoji Temple

Wisteria viewing spot on top of a small hill, where Amida, a deity for safe childbirth, is enshrined.

The temple is said to have been built by Chinzei Shonin, the second founder of the Jodo sect, at the place of his mother's birth as a family temple to mourn her death in childbirth.
The temple's principal deity is the Haraobi Amida Nyorai, which attracts many worshippers to pray for easy childbirth.
Kichijoji Temple is also known for its wisteria. The temple grounds are home to three 160-year-old Noda wisteria trees, as well as purple, white, red and fuchi-red wisteria, which bloom over an area of about 1,000 sq m. The wisteria flowers, which are at their best in late April, cover the grounds like a canopy, turning them white and purple and creating a spectacular sight.
The annual Wisteria Festival is held from 27-29 April, with many stalls and a performance of 'kichijo taiko' drums, a well-known local entertainment. The Gokaicho of the main deity, the belly-band Amitabha Nyorai, is also held during the festival.
