Yametsuhime Shrine
八女津媛神社
The region’s name, Yame derives from this Yamestuhime Shrine.
As the legend of the name goes, in the age of the Yamato dynasty, when Emperor Keiko visited Yame, the prefectural chief of Minuma, Saruomi who had governed the region reported to her, “A goddess lives in this region. Her name is Yatushime and she is always in a mountain.”
The shrine was built in 719. Even now, the dance called Furyu is dedicated to the god of the shrine to pray for abundant harvests and good health once in every five years (held on the third Sunday of November) (a Municipal-Designated Intangible Folk Cultural Asset).
