Kuroiwa Inari Shrine
黒岩稲荷神社
Power up your energy by climbing the hill to look at the series of red Torii gates and the worship hall.
Legend says that this shrine was established during the reign of Emperor Go-Toba when Jizen-ni, a member of the Heike (Taira) clan, secretly escaped from the Battle of Dan-no-ura to Mt. Kuroiwa, where he enshrined a branch of the divine spirit of Fushimi Inari from Kyoto. The deity enshrined here is Uka-no-Mitama-no-Kami. This deity was widely worshipped as a deity of agriculture, where the “Uka” in the name represents grains. But as history progressed, the deity came to represent occupations in general, adding industry and commerce to agriculture, and today continues to be worshiped widely in that role. Visitors here can worship in serenity, surrounded by beautiful cherry blossoms and fresh greenery. The Hatsuumasai festival is held on the first day of the horse in February (referring to a system in which the twelve zodiac signs are cycled over the days of the year), during which the grounds bustle with worshippers.
