Tanabata Shrine (Himekoso Shrine)
七夕神社(媛社神社)
This shrine is dedicated to Orihime. As many as 300,000 wishes on paper strips arrive here during the Tanabata festival.
This shrine, officially named Himekoso Shrine, enshrines the deities Shokujo-Shin and Himekoso-Shin. It is loved by local residents by the name Tanabata-san. It’s long history dates from a mention in the Hizen-no-Kuni Fudoki, or the record of Hizen Province, recorded in the 8th century. In the 1,300 years since that time, local residents have worshipped their local deity here.
The Tanabata summer festival is celebrated on August 7th of each year, under the name Tsukiokure Tanabata. Traditional rituals are held on the previous night, August 6th, and the grounds are decorated with wishes sent from throughout Japan.
The shrine is also recognized as the “Holyland of Lovers” because it is considered to be an ideally romantic place to propose marriage.
