Celebrate Young Girls' Growth at Yanagawa Dolls' Festival Sagemon Meguri
In Japan, March 3rd is Hina Matsuri (Dolls' Festival), a day to pray for the healthy growth and happiness of young girls. It is tradition for families who have daughters to display "Hina dolls" representing a marriage ceremony at the Imperial Court.
In the Yanagawa region of Fukuoka Prefecture, colorful "sagemon" are also hung alongside the Hina dolls. Sagemon are handmade cloth decorations with auspicious motifs. During the "Yanagawa Dolls' Festival Sagemon Meguri," held from February 11th to April 3rd, you can see them in the shopping districts and tourist facilities of Yanagawa City.
During mid-March, little girls dressed in colorful kimono ride on boats in the "Ohinasama Water Parade." Since river cruising is Yanagawa's claim to fame, this adorable parade is the ideal fit for the city's character.
